Arbequina Olive Tree For Sale

Transform Your Garden Into a Mediterranean Oasis The Arbequina olive tree is a popular olive cultivar from Spain that brings authentic Mediterranean beauty and fresh olive oil production straight to your backyard. With its silvery green leaves, fragrant spring blooms, and bountiful harvests of delicious olives, this beautiful tree delivers the rare combination of year-round ornamental appeal and practical fruit production. Whether you have a sprawling property or a smaller garden, the Arbequina's compact form and drought tolerant nature make it an excellent choice for our climate. Why You'll Love It Premium Olive Oil Production – Arbequina olives are great for making high-quality olive oil with a buttery, mild flavor featuring notes of green apple, ripe banana, and almond. Harvest your own fresh olives and start making olive oil at home. Compact Size for Any Space – Arbequina olive trees grow 15 to 20 feet tall with a manageable spread, perfect for smaller gardens, patios, and even container growing. You don't need an orchard to grow fruit. Year-Round Beauty – Evergreen silvery green leaves create stunning contrast in your garden through every season, with fragrant blooming in spring and a colorful harvest in late fall when olives shift from green to purple-black. Early Fruit Production – This self fertile tree can produce fruit within just 2-3 years of planting, far faster than most olive trees. Mature Arbequina trees can produce up to fifteen pounds of olives annually. Climate Champion – Drought-tolerant once established, this tree thrives in a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters. It requires little water once its roots are set. What Makes It Different Most olive trees grow large and sprawling, take years to produce their first harvest, and often require a second tree for cross-pollination. The Arbequina olive offers: Self-Pollinating Advantage – The tree is self-pollinating, needing only one for fruit. You don't need an additional plant taking up space-only one plant delivers a full harvest. Unlike many olive varieties that depend on cross-pollination, a single Arbequina will produce fruit reliably on its own. Cold Hardy for California – Arbequina trees can withstand temperatures as low as 15°F (−9°C) without damage when fully established, making them suitable for inland valleys and foothill areas across USDA zones 8 to 10. Superior Oil Quality – Originally cultivated in the Catalonia region of Spain, Arbequina has centuries of heritage producing premium olive oil prized worldwide. The oil is rich in oleic acid (~70-72%) with a distinctively smooth, buttery flavor and low bitterness. Container-Friendly Growth – Unlike large varieties such as Mission or Sevillano, Arbequina's compact growth habit makes it ideal for large containers on your patio, allowing you to bring your olive tree inside during extreme cold snaps. How To Grow The Arbequina Olive Tree Successfully Plant in Full Sun Choose a permanent place in your garden with full sun-olive trees thrive in locations with 8 to 10 hours of sunlight daily. Dig your hole twice the width of the root ball, loosen any circling roots, and set the tree in well draining soil. Backfill with your native soil and tamp gently to eliminate air pockets. The optimal soil pH for Arbequina trees is between 7.0 and 8.0. Minimal Care Required Water young olive trees weekly for the first year to establish deep, healthy roots. Once established, water deeply but infrequently-these trees are drought-resistant and hardy. Prune Arbequina olive trees in late winter or early spring to shape, remove diseased branches, and thin out young plants to improve sunlight penetration and air circulation. Fertilize olive trees with a balanced fertilizer in spring, and apply mulch around the base to conserve moisture. Harvest Your Bounty Arbequina olives can be harvested in late fall when they transition from green to reddish-purple. Olives can be harvested as early as two years after planting. Pick them for table olives at various stages of ripeness, or wait until they're fully ripe for maximum oil content. Arbequina olives can be enjoyed at almost any stage of ripeness-from bright green for brining to deep purple-black for pressing into your own olive oil. Frequently Asked Questions How soon will my tree produce olives? Most Arbequina trees begin to produce fruit within 2-3 years of being planted, with high yields and full production by year 5. To drastically increase early fruit production, ensure your tree receives adequate sunlight, proper watering, and balanced nutrition. Avoid high nitrogen fertilizer that pushes leafy growth at the expense of fruiting. Can I grow it in a container? Yes. Arbequina olive trees are an excellent choice for large containers and can be moved indoors during extreme cold. While a small container works temporarily for young plants, plan to size up as the tree grows. Container growing also works well in borderline USDA zones where you may need to protect the tree from winter frost. Learn more about caring for olive trees in our detailed guide. Do I need special care in California? Minimal care is required. Plant in well drained soil, ensure good air circulation to prevent diseases and pests, and avoid overwatering-especially during winter months. Young Arbequina trees need regular, deep watering for root establishment, but once the roots are set, this tree is remarkably self-sufficient in California's climate. Good drainage is essential; waterlogged ground leads to root problems. Do I need more than one tree? No. The Arbequina is self pollinating, so a single tree will produce fruit on its own. However, planting a second tree nearby can increase fruit set and boost overall harvest if space allows. Can I use arbequina olives for both oil and eating? Absolutely. The tree produces small, flavorful olives for oil-Arbequina is one of the most popular varieties for high quality olive oil worldwide, accounting for roughly 78% of all olive acres planted in California. The olives also make wonderful table olives when properly cured in brine. The flavor is mild and approachable, perfect for those who prefer a less pungent oil or olive. Ready to Plant?
