Aquinnah

This painting is inspired by the rich cultural heritage of the Indigenous Wampanoag people who reside in Aquinnah, located on Martha's Vineyard. I attempted to capture the strength and resilience through timeless eyes and vibrant colors, symbolizing a deep connection to her ancestors and the land. The use of blue tones reflects the oceanic surroundings of Aquinnah, a place known for its stunning clay cliffs and spiritual significance. Traditional elements, such as intricate beadwork and feathered adornments, highlight the importance of storytelling and identity in Indigenous artistry. Her gaze is both powerful and serene, suggesting wisdom and a deep understanding of her heritage. The stylized, almost ethereal approach blends realism with dreamlike abstraction, evoking a sense of reverence for Indigenous beauty and strength. Through this artwork, I pay homage to the enduring spirit of the Wampanoag people and their timeless connection to Martha’s Vineyard.
