April, Esquire Calendar by Varga

This enchanting April page from the 1949 Esquire Girl Calendar showcases Alberto Vargas at the height of his powers. The Peruvian-American master renders his signature subject with characteristic elegance: a playful blonde balancing a naval officer's cap on her upturned feet, her knowing smile engaging the viewer with warmth and wit. The accompanying verse, 'This honey has a serviceman, Away out on a limb,' captures the romantic spirit of post-war America when returning servicemen were reuniting with sweethearts across the nation. Vargas's airbrush technique creates the luminous, almost ethereal quality that made his work legendary. The soft flesh tones, the carefully rendered turquoise shorts, and the crisp detail of the military cap demonstrate his technical mastery while maintaining the idealized, accessible beauty that defined American pin-up art. Published by Esquire magazine during the golden age of calendar art, this piece represents the pinnacle of the genre. A standout piece for collectors of mid-century illustration, Vargas artwork, or military-themed Americana. The complete calendar grid and original verse add both historical context and visual interest to this museum-worthy example of American commercial art. *Please note image is from a calendar that has been separated, top border has been minorly trimmed to remove calendar wire-holes from binding.
