Antique Thar Desert Floor Mirror

Two peacocks face each other across the lintel, and everything beneath them is carved. This antique teak entrance frame comes from Churu, in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan, and it once held a pair of doors. Rope-twist borders run down both sides, leaf and scroll pilasters rise from lotus-petal bases, and a base panel of leaves and star flowers anchors the whole frame. The sun-bleached teak has softened to a pale, honeyed tone that shows every cut of the chisel. The doors are gone, so we have set a mirror in the opening, and the frame now works as a statement piece for a wall, an entry or a long room. At 63 inches wide and 100 inches tall, with a 10-inch depth and a 31.75 by 63.75 inch mirror, it fills a wall the way an architectural element does and doubles the light and the room in front of it. .
