Coach covers were a late 19th century innovation. In this period, travel was by horse drawn coach. Wealthy travelers were appealing targets for robbers and highwaymen. Coach covers are designed to snap over diamond earrings, making them appear less valuable. Coach covers also helped a woman adhere to the strict Victorian social mores. Decorum dictated that diamonds could not be worn during the day. A woman could camouflage her diamond earrings during the day, then remove the gold covers for evening.
