Angelina Stonecrop

Angelina Stonecrop (Sedum rupestre 'Angelina')Angelina Stonecrop is a bright, low-growing groundcover that brings long-lasting color to sunny spaces with very little effort. Its needle-like, succulent foliage forms a dense mat that helps soften edges, fill gaps, and keep beds looking finished. The golden tones stay vivid through the growing season and can deepen to orange-red in colder weather for extra seasonal interest. If you need a tough, waterwise plant that still looks intentional, this one fits the job. Distinctive FeaturesThis mat-forming stonecrop is grown primarily for its chartreuse to golden-yellow foliage, which creates a clean, fine-textured carpet that spreads steadily over time. In summer, small, star-shaped yellow flowers rise just above the foliage and add a light, airy bloom layer without interrupting the groundcover effect. The plant tolerates heat, drought, poor soil, and shallow rocky sites once established, and it is often less appealing to deer and rabbits than many soft-leaved perennials. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun delivers the best color and the tightest growth, with light shade tolerated in some climates. Soil: Provide well-drained soil and avoid heavy, consistently wet sites to prevent stress and rot. Water: Water to establish, then allow soil to dry between waterings, as it prefers dry to medium moisture. USDA Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 5 to 8 in typical garden conditions. Mature Size: Expect a low mat about 4 to 6 inches tall that spreads roughly 12 to 24 inches wide over time. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use a small drift as a foliage focal point where the golden color can pop against stone, mulch, or darker plants. Groundcover: Mass plant to create a durable, colorful carpet that helps knit beds together in full sun. Rock Gardens: Tuck into gravel and rock settings where fast drainage and heat reflectance are common. Edging: Line paths and bed fronts for a clean, low border that stays tidy with minimal trimming. Containers: Let it spill over pot edges to add bright texture and a trailing finish in sunny planters. Low Maintenance Care Pruning: Shear lightly after flowering or anytime you want a tighter outline, as it responds well to a quick trim. Fertilizing: Skip rich feeding, because lean soils help maintain compact growth and strong color. Mulching: Use gravel or a thin mulch layer and keep crowns uncovered to reduce excess moisture around stems. Winter Interest: Leave foliage in place for off-season color, then tidy up in early spring as new growth starts. Propagation: Expand plantings easily by taking small stem pieces or divisions and setting them into well-drained soil. Why Choose Angelina Stonecrop? Color That Lasts: Golden foliage holds strong through the season and can shift to orange-red tones in colder weather. Drought Tolerance: Succulent growth handles dry spells once established, making it a smart choice for waterwise planting. Easy Coverage: Spreading, mat-forming habit fills gaps quickly and creates a finished look in beds and borders. Pollinator Friendly: Summer flowers provide nectar value without requiring extra care or staking. Tough Site Adaptability: Performs well in heat, rocky soils, and lower fertility areas where many perennials struggle. Angelina Stonecrop is a simple way to add dependable color and texture to sunny landscapes, especially where drainage is fast and maintenance time is limited. Pair it with ornamental grasses, drought-tolerant perennials, or darker evergreens to highlight the foliage. For a bright, hardworking groundcover that stays neat and resilient, it is an easy plant to build around.
