André Masson: The Moon

André Masson (1896–1974) was a pioneering French Surrealist painter who transformed psychological exploration into visual form. Drawing from childhood experiences in nature and his subconscious mind, Masson developed a distinctive style merging biomorphic abstraction with automatic drawing techniques. His works depict dreamlike landscapes populated by writhing mythological creatures and metamorphic forms, investigating themes of desire, violence, and transformation. As one of the first artists to embrace André Breton's Surrealist manifesto, Masson's paintings unlock the hidden dimensions of human consciousness, revealing the turbulent interplay between reason and instinct that defines the Surrealist vision.
