And then, ... (blue)

Takashi Murakami - And then, ... (blue) The work “And then, ... (blue)” by Takashi Murakami, created in 2011, is an offset silkscreen print produced in a limited edition of 300 copies, each signed and numbered by the artist. Measuring 68×68 cm, this work embodies Murakami's characteristic Superflat style, combining elements of Japanese tradition with contemporary pop aesthetics. The composition features the iconic character of Mr. DOB, one of Murakami's most celebrated creations, here depicted with a joyful expression and a deliberately ambiguous appearance. His face, disproportionate and tilted toward the edge of the painting, dominates the space with its vivid cobalt blue that contrasts with his large green eyes and pale complexion. The shaded checkerboard background creates a three-dimensional effect that adds depth, while Mr. DOB's exaggerated, almost surreal smile conveys a playful yet eerie energy. The work reflects Murakami's ability to combine influences from Japanese pop culture, such as manga and anime, with references to global icons and a minimalist aesthetic. “And then, ... (blue)” explores themes such as consumerism, cultural identity, and the interplay between high and low culture, presenting an eye-catching image that balances humor and critique. This silkscreen print is a representative example of Murakami's work, which stands out for its ability to reinterpret familiar symbols in new and provocative ways, challenging the viewer to ponder the meaning behind the bright, colorful surface.
