Across cultures and centuries, amethyst has been valued as a stone of clarity and composure. Its name comes from the ancient Greek amethystos, “not intoxicated,” reflecting the belief that it protected against confusion of both mind and spirit. This meaning carries through to modern times as many still use this stone to support their sobriety. In later traditions—from Egyptian amulets to medieval bishop’s rings—it continued to symbolize balance, insight, and spiritual calm. Long associated with sacredness and contemplation, amethyst has been worn as a mediator between the earthly and the divine, a reminder of the clear perception and inner stillness through which higher understanding becomes possible.
