American Pillar Thuja – Narrow Columnar Arborvitae

American Pillar Thuja – The Narrowest, Tallest Arborvitae for Maximum Privacy in Minimum Space When space is tight but privacy is non-negotiable, the American Pillar Thuja is the answer. One of the narrowest columnar arborvitae varieties available, American Pillar grows in a dramatically upright, pencil-thin form — reaching 20–30 ft. tall while staying just 3–4 ft. wide at maturity. That means you get a towering, dense privacy screen without sacrificing precious yard space to a wide-spreading hedge. Cold-hardy to Zone 3, deer resistant, and fast-growing, American Pillar is the premier choice for narrow side yards, property line screens, urban gardens, and any situation where you need maximum height in minimum width. Available from 8–10 inch starters through established 5–6 ft. trees, with a money-saving 10-Pack for complete privacy hedgerows. Why You’ll Love American Pillar Thuja Ultra-Narrow Form: Stays just 3–4 ft. wide at maturity — one of the narrowest columnar arborvitae available, ideal for tight spaces where wider trees won’t fit Impressive Height: Reaches 20–30 ft. tall — a towering privacy screen that blocks second-story views and provides complete visual separation Fast-Growing: 2–3 ft. of growth per year under good conditions — effective screening within 3–5 years from planting Exceptional Cold Hardiness: Hardy to Zone 3 — one of the most cold-tolerant arborvitae varieties available, thriving in the harshest northern winters Deer Resistant: Significantly more resistant to deer browsing than standard arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis) — a critical advantage in suburban and rural landscapes Rich Green, No Winter Bronzing: Holds its rich green color through winter without the yellowing or bronzing that affects many arborvitae varieties Dense, Year-Round Privacy: Thick, overlapping evergreen foliage provides effective screening 365 days a year Low Maintenance: Once established, requires minimal care — no regular pruning needed to maintain its naturally columnar form Planning Your Privacy Screen – Spacing & 10-Pack Guide For a dense, continuous privacy screen, plant American Pillar Thuja 3–5 feet apart. Its naturally narrow form means canopies merge quickly at this spacing. A 10-Pack covers approximately 30–50 linear feet of screening — ideal for side yards, property lines, and pool enclosures. 2–3 ft. 10-Pack ($999.95): Best value — ~$100/tree. Full screening in 4–5 years For larger projects, combine multiple 10-Packs. The narrow mature width means you can plant more trees per linear foot than wider varieties, achieving denser screening faster. Growing Zones & Care Guide USDA Hardiness Zones: Zones 3–8. American Pillar is one of the most cold-hardy arborvitae varieties available — an excellent choice for northern gardens where many other privacy screen trees are not reliably hardy. Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade. Full sun (6+ hours daily) produces the densest growth and best screening. Tolerates partial shade but with reduced density and a slightly looser form. Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system. Once established, moderately drought-tolerant. Deep, infrequent watering is preferred. Avoid waterlogged conditions. Soil: Adaptable to a wide range of soils — clay, loam, and sandy soils are all tolerated. Prefers moist, well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.5). Spacing: Plant 3–5 ft. apart for a privacy hedge. The narrow mature width allows tighter spacing than most arborvitae, achieving a denser screen faster. For specimen or windbreak planting, 6–8 ft. spacing allows full natural development. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring during the first 2–3 years to support rapid establishment. Established trees in average soils typically need little to no fertilization. Pruning: Minimal pruning needed — the naturally columnar form is self-maintaining. If desired, lightly tip-prune in late spring after new growth hardens to encourage additional density. Avoid cutting back into bare interior wood. Winter Color: American Pillar holds its rich green color through winter without bronzing — a key advantage over standard Thuja occidentalis varieties. Mature Size: 20–30 ft. tall, 3–4 ft. wide — an exceptionally narrow, space-efficient columnar form. Compare With Another Great Thuja Need a faster-growing option with a slightly wider, denser canopy?
