Callicarpa americana (American Beautyberry purple)

If you are looking for the perfect understory or woodland garden shrub, Texas native American beautyberry delivers. Its open growth habit is graceful, and the sparkling magenta berries that appear in late summer and early fall are dazzling and relished by birds. Make sure to give it room, though, because American beautyberry shines when it is allowed to grow and not be trimmed to fit the space. It makes the perfect backdrop for your garden.   AT A GLANCE  Texas native Yes Water use Low, medium Sun exposure Part sun to shade Bloom color White and pink Bloom time Spring, summer Mature height 4-6 ft Mature spread 4-6 ft Attracts Birds, butterflies Notes Small blooms are followed by magenta purple berries.   DISTRIBUTION MAPS  USDA MAP BONAP MAP  Present in state  Present in county and native  Native to North America, but adventive & escaped in state           Not present in state  Present and rare, native in county  Previously present, now extinct  Questionable presence (cross-hatched, regardless of color)
