The ancient Greek term for Amber was elektron, a word referring to the sun. Amber is known to develop an electric charge when rubbed, and our word ‘electricity’ derives from the ancient Greek term for Amber. The word ‘Amber’ comes from ambar, the Arabic word for ambergris. Amber varies in color from yellow to brown or reddish brown and is often transparent. Frequently it contains bits of plant material or fossil insects, some dating as far back as 120 million years ago. Baltic Amber, which is usually considered to be the finest, was formed from the resins of coniferous trees some 30 to 60 million years ago.    *Real amber can be fluoresced under UV light. The amount of fluorescence varies from piece to piece. In a dark space, shine a UV black light on the samples in question, and if it is authentic amber, it will fluoresce a bright blue or yellow green.
