Amber Glow Dawn Redwood

Amber Glow Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides 'Amber Glow')Amber Glow Dawn Redwood brings vivid golden foliage and a strong upright form to the landscape, giving gardeners a bright deciduous conifer that stands out well beyond spring. Its color stays cleaner and more usable through summer than many yellow conifers, which makes it especially valuable where you want a specimen tree with bold foliage but a more refined look than a broad evergreen mass. This selection adds height, texture, and seasonal color while still offering the graceful softness dawn redwoods are known for. As it matures, it becomes a striking vertical anchor with year-round landscape value. Distinctive FeaturesAmber Glow Dawn Redwood is prized for its bright yellow foliage, broad upright habit, and attractive reddish brown shaggy bark that becomes more visible after leaf drop. New growth may emerge with a slight burgundy tint before quickly turning fully golden, then develops orange tones in fall before the needles drop for winter. It is a deciduous conifer with soft feathery needles and a fast growth rate, but it maintains a more compact look than the species. A conservative mature size is about 25 feet tall and 15 feet wide, making it substantial enough for specimen use while still more manageable than a full-sized species dawn redwood. Growing Conditions Sun: Plant in full sun for the best golden foliage color, strongest branching, and most attractive overall form. Soil: Grow in moist, well-drained soil and adapt it to a range of garden soils as long as they do not stay dry for extended periods. Water: Provide regular water during establishment and maintain even moisture for the best growth and foliage quality. Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 5 to 8. Habit: Expect a broad upright, pyramidal deciduous conifer with soft textured foliage and a strong central leader. Ideal Uses Specimen Tree: Use it as a stand-alone ornamental where its golden foliage and upright structure can be fully appreciated. Focal Point: Place it in a prominent sunny location where the bright foliage can anchor the landscape and draw attention across the season. Lawn and Island Beds: Plant it in open areas where its shape and color can be viewed from multiple angles without crowding. Mixed Conifer Plantings: Combine it with green and blue conifers to create stronger contrast and four-season texture. Large Foundation or Estate Planting: Use it where a taller ornamental conifer can provide vertical structure without the heaviness of a dense evergreen wall. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Deep watering during the first growing seasons helps establish a stronger root system and supports healthier growth in summer heat. Mulching: Apply mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture, reduce weed pressure, and moderate soil temperatures. Pruning: Prune only as needed to remove damaged or poorly placed branches and preserve its natural upright form. Placement: Give it enough space for mature height and spread so the branching structure can develop cleanly. Moisture Management: Avoid prolonged drought, since more even moisture helps maintain the best foliage color and overall vigor. Why Choose Amber Glow Dawn Redwood? Bold Golden Foliage: Bright yellow needles bring standout color that remains useful and visible through the growing season. Deciduous Conifer Interest: Soft foliage, fall color, and exposed shaggy bark create more than one season of appeal. Manageable Landscape Size: It offers meaningful height and presence while staying more compact-looking than the species. Fast Growth: Strong annual growth helps it become a significant landscape feature in less time than many slower conifers. Distinctive Garden Character: Its combination of fine texture, golden color, and upright habit gives the landscape a more memorable and layered look. Amber Glow Dawn Redwood is an excellent choice for landscapes that need a specimen tree with bright foliage, elegant texture, and strong vertical structure. Its golden needles and deciduous character make it feel lighter and more dynamic than many evergreen conifers, while its bark and fall color extend the display beyond summer. For gardeners and designers looking for a colorful conifer with real presence, this selection offers lasting value.
