Alyssum

Bright, compact, and wonderfully fragrant, Alyssum (Lobularia maritima) brings easy color to beds, borders, and containers. In North Texas, it’s a favorite for spring color and early fall blooms, forming a low-growing mat that trails over the edge of planters and whispers with a honey-scented charm. Available in classic white, plus lavender and gold tones, alyssum pairs beautifully with heat-loving annuals and perennials alike. Premier Nursery grows true-to-type alyssum suited for our climate, and our knowledgeable staff can help you select the right cultivar for your space. How to Grow and Care When to plant: Plant in spring after the last frost or in early fall for color that carries into milder winter weeks. In hotter parts of North Texas, aim for the cooler shoulder seasons for best performance. Sun and placement: Best in full sun to light shade. In the hottest heat, a touch of afternoon shade helps extend bloom time. Soil: Use well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Alyssum tolerates average soil but loves a lightly fertile mix. Spacing: Space plants about 6-12 inches apart, depending on the cultivar, to allow for cascading growth and air circulation. Water: Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. In extreme heat, more frequent watering may be necessary; avoid letting the roots dry out. Fertilizing: A light, balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season helps sustain bright, continuous blooms. Maintenance: Regular deadheading encourages long-lasting flowering. For a neater look, trim back after peak heat to refresh growth. Pest and disease: Alyssum is generally hardy, but watch for aphids and powdery mildew in humid, crowded conditions. Ensure good air flow and proper water at the base of the plant to minimize issues. Propagation and lifespan: Often grown as an annual in North Texas, but some cool-season varieties can self-seed. It’s easy to start from plug installations or seeds. Why Premier Nursery Premier Nursery is your local North Texas source for healthy Alyssum plants and expert guidance.
