Lobularia

Sweet Alyssum (Lobularia maritima)Sweet alyssum is a low, spreading bloomer that quickly turns bare soil into a soft carpet of color and fragrance. It is an easy way to keep bed edges, paths, and containers looking full and finished with minimal effort. In cooler weather it blooms heavily, and with simple trimming it can keep producing flowers for a long season. If you want a dependable filler that brightens small spaces and supports pollinators, this plant fits the job. Distinctive FeaturesThis plant forms a dense mat of fine green foliage topped with clusters of tiny, four-petaled flowers that often carry a sweet, honey-like scent. Flower colors commonly include white, pink, and lavender to purple, depending on selection. Bloom is strongest in spring and again in fall, and it can slow down in intense summer heat, especially in humid climates. Its naturally low, spreading habit makes it especially useful for clean edges and a continuous ribbon of bloom. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to partial shade, with some afternoon shade helpful in hot climates. Soil: Well-drained soil, from sandy to loamy, with average fertility. Water: Moderate water to establish, then water when the top soil dries, because it tolerates short dry spells once rooted in. Zones: Grown as an annual in most zones, and can be a short-lived perennial in USDA Zones 9 to 11. Mature Size: Typically 4 to 8 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide, spreading wider in ideal conditions. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use it to create a bright, fragrant ribbon along a walkway edge where the bloom reads as a continuous line of color. Edging: Defines bed fronts with a low, tidy mat that softens hard lines. Containers: Fills gaps and spills gently over rims in mixed pots and window boxes. Groundcover: Covers open soil quickly to reduce weeds and keep beds looking finished. Pollinator Plantings: Supports beneficial insects with nectar-rich blooms through the cooler parts of the season. Low Maintenance Care Shearing: Trim back after a heavy bloom flush to refresh growth and encourage more flowering. Watering: Keep evenly moist during establishment, then water during prolonged dry periods for best performance. Feeding: Use light feeding in containers, and avoid heavy fertilizer that can push foliage over flowers. Heat Management: Provide afternoon shade and consistent moisture in hot, humid weather to help maintain bloom. Cleanup: Remove tired growth as needed to keep the planting dense and uniform. Why Choose Sweet Alyssum? Fast Fill: Quickly forms a low carpet that makes beds and pots look finished. Long Season Interest: Blooms heavily in spring and fall, with potential for extended flowering with simple trimming. Fragrance: Sweet-scented flowers add a pleasant detail near paths and patios. Pollinator Support: Attracts beneficial insects and helps keep the garden active. Easy Versatility: Works as edging, groundcover, or container filler in a wide range of designs. If you want an easy plant that makes everything around it look more complete, sweet alyssum is a reliable choice. Give it sun to light shade, good drainage, and an occasional haircut, and it will keep producing a clean, flower-filled carpet. It is especially effective in repeated bands along edges and in mixed containers where it can knit the planting together. The result is simple, steady color and a finished look with very little maintenance.
