Aloe 'Zambezi'

Description Aloe 'Zambezi' Care Guide FAQ/Common Issues   Aloe 'Zambezi' is a lace aloe succulent from the Asphodelaceae family, native to the rocky hillsides and grasslands of southern Africa. It thrives indoors on a sunny windowsill or outdoors in warm climates and adapts well to container growing with tolerance for drought.   The leaves form tight, symmetrical rosettes of deep green with soft white teeth along the edges and scattered white tubercles across the surface, giving it the signature textured look of a lace aloe. Each leaf is firm, fleshy, and tapered to a neat point, and the white markings are visible in bright light. Over time, it offsets into a clumping form that fills a pot with multiple rosettes arranged in layered, geometric patterns.   Aloe 'Zambezi' produces upright flower spikes bearing tubular orange to coral blooms, typically appearing in late autumn through winter when nighttime temperatures drop slightly. Flowering is most reliable when the plant receives plenty of bright light throughout the growing season and experiences cooler nights during the colder months. It also grows well on bright windowsills, sunny patios, and in mixed succulent container gardens.   Move it outside for summer to soak up natural light, then bring it back indoors before temperatures drop below 25°F in autumn. You can leave it up to ten days without water. Keep it on a high shelf if pets or toddlers are present, since the sap can cause skin and paw irritation and the leaves are not safe to ingest.   Aloe 'Zambezi' grows well in bright indirect light to partial or full sun, though direct south-facing windows can scorch the leaves. Rotate the pot regularly to ensure even growth on all sides.   Water it deeply every 2–3 weeks in summer, reducing to once a month in winter, always letting soil dry completely between waterings.   Aloe 'Zambezi' does best in a gritty, well-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with perlite or coarse sand for extra drainage.   It prefers temperatures between 50–85°F and should be protected from frost below 25°F.   Aloe 'Zambezi' grows at a moderate pace and needs only a light balanced succulent fertilizer once in spring and once in summer.   It is hardy in USDA zones 9–11 and tolerates brief dips to around 25°F before frost becomes a threat. It grows outdoors year-round in much of Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, and Hawaii, as well as Louisiana, southern Georgia, South Carolina, coastal Alabama, Mississippi, and southern Nevada. The Oregon coast, far southern Utah, and sheltered microclimates in New Mexico and Arkansas can also support outdoor growth, especially with winter protection. Q: How often should I water Aloe 'Zambezi'? A: Every 2–3 weeks during warm months and once a month in winter. Let the soil dry completely between waterings since overwatering is the primary cause of root rot in this species. Q: Is it safe around cats and dogs? A: No. Aloe 'Zambezi' sap can cause skin and paw irritation, and the leaves are harmful if ingested. Keep it on a high shelf well out of reach of pets and toddlers. Q: Can Aloe 'Zambezi' bloom indoors? A: Yes. Blooms appear most reliably when paired with a bright window location and a slight drop in nighttime temperature during autumn and winter. Q: What window direction works best for indoor growth? A: A bright south or west-facing window suits Aloe 'Zambezi' well. If leaves begin to pale or show reddish tones, relocate it slightly back from the glass to prevent sun scorch. Q: How big does Aloe 'Zambezi' get? A: Each rosette typically reaches 6–10 inches tall and wide, with clumps expanding gradually as it offsets. Q: Can it survive a month without water? A: Aloe 'Zambezi' tolerates 10 days without water during warm months. In cool conditions with reduced light, intervals between watering can extend further.
