Aloe 'Moonrise'

Description Aloe 'Moonrise' Care Guide FAQ/Common Issues   Aloe 'Moonrise' is a rare succulent hybrid in the Asphodelaceae family, grown for its compact rosette form and drought-tolerant nature. It grows well in arid, rocky conditions similar to those found across southern Africa, where many aloe species originate.   The leaves are broad and fleshy, tapering to a point, and edged with small teeth along the margins. Leaf coloration shifts depending on sun exposure, moving from green in lower light toward orange and red tones under direct sun. The rosette form stays compact, and the plant offsets slowly over time to form a small cluster.   'Moonrise' produces tubular flowers on an upright spike, typically in shades of coral to orange, during late winter to early spring. It requires a drop in nighttime temperatures to trigger blooming. The flowers attract pollinators and may produce pollen that affects those with plant-related allergies.   Move it outside for summer, but cover it from rain to prevent root rot from excess moisture sitting in the rosette. It does well in both direct sun and low light, though a south-facing window may cause leaf scorch. Rotate the pot periodically so all sides of the rosette receive even light. You can leave it up to ten days without water. It wilts slightly when the soil is dry. Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant, and its sap can irritate skin and paws on contact. Keep it on a high shelf out of reach of small children and pets.   Aloe 'Moonrise' grows well in bright indirect light to direct sun, avoiding prolonged exposure in south-facing windows where leaf scorch can occur.   Water it every 10 to 14 days in the growing season, letting the soil dry out fully between waterings, and reduce to once a month in winter.   'Moonrise' grows well in a fast-draining cactus and perlite mix that prevents water from sitting around the roots.   It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 85°F and stays away from air conditioning vents or heating units that blow dry, direct air onto the leaves.   'Moonrise' is a slow-growing succulent; feed it once in spring and once in summer with a diluted balanced fertilizer.   It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, tolerating outdoor conditions down to around 25°F to 30°F for brief periods. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and Hawaii. It can also stay outdoors through autumn in parts of the Pacific Northwest and the Gulf Coast before temperatures drop below its tolerance. Q: How drought tolerant is Aloe 'Moonrise' compared to other succulents? A: It handles dry periods well. The leaves may look thinner or less firm as the soil dries out between waterings. Q: How do I know when it needs more water? A: Aloe 'Moonrise' wilts slightly and the leaves may appear deflated or feel softer to the touch after extended drought. Q: Is 'Moonrise' safe for cats and dogs? A: Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant, and contact with the sap can irritate their paws and skin. Q: Can this plant grow under office lighting? A: 'Moonrise' can manage under bright LED office lights, though growth will be slower and the leaf color will stay greener without direct sun. Q: How do I get 'Moonrise' to bloom? A: A consistent drop in nighttime temperatures during late autumn and early winter initiates the flowering cycle that emerges in late winter to early spring. Q: How rare is this plant, and is it good for beginner growers? A: 'Moonrise' is a rare hybrid variety not commonly found in garden centers. It requires infrequent watering and minimal intervention once established.
