Stingray Elephant Ear

Stingray Elephant Ear (Alocasia macrorrhiza 'Stingray')Stingray Elephant Ear is a distinctive tropical plant valued for its unusual leaf shape, glossy green foliage, and bold upright form. Each leaf has a wide, wing-like blade with a long, narrow tail-like tip, giving the plant its memorable stingray appearance. It brings strong personality to bright indoor rooms, patios, seasonal containers, and protected tropical-style plantings without relying on flowers for impact. With bright filtered light, warmth, humidity, steady moisture, and excellent drainage, Stingray Elephant Ear adds sculptural tropical character to indoor and outdoor plant displays. Distinctive FeaturesStingray Elephant Ear produces glossy dark green leaves with rounded, wing-like sides and an elongated pointed tail that creates its signature silhouette. The leaves are held on upright stems that may show red to brown mottling, adding extra texture below the foliage. In warm, humid, well-grown conditions, it can develop into a substantial tropical specimen, while indoor or container plants usually remain more compact. Flowers may appear occasionally on mature plants as a spathe and spadix, but this Alocasia is grown primarily for its unusual foliage and architectural habit. Growing Conditions Sun: Grows best in bright indirect light, filtered sun, or partial shade, with protection from harsh direct afternoon sun that can scorch the foliage. Soil: Prefers fertile, organically rich, well-drained soil or a chunky indoor aroid mix that holds light moisture while allowing good airflow around the roots. Water: Keep soil evenly moist during active growth, allowing the upper portion to dry slightly before watering again, and avoid soggy conditions. USDA Zones: Best grown as a houseplant in most climates and outdoors year-round only in frost-free tropical to subtropical conditions, generally USDA Zones 10 to 12, with protected use possible in warmer Zone 9 sites. Mature Size: Typically reaches about 3 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide in containers or indoor settings, with larger size possible outdoors in warm, humid, frost-free climates. Habit: Forms an upright, clumping tropical plant with large glossy leaves rising from the base on sturdy petioles. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a sculptural foliage focal point in bright indoor rooms, patio containers, entry planters, poolside groupings, courtyards, or protected tropical-style beds where its stingray-shaped leaves can stand out. Collector Plant: Feature in a specialty tropical plant collection where its unusual leaf shape and patterned stems can be appreciated up close. Container Planting: Grow in a large, well-drained decorative pot that supports steady moisture while allowing excess water to drain freely. Patio Plant: Move outdoors during warm weather in a shaded or filtered-light location, then bring indoors before temperatures turn cool. Tropical Garden: Pair with caladiums, cannas, bananas, gingers, ferns, and other bold foliage plants for a layered warm-season display. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Water when the upper soil begins to dry, then allow excess water to drain fully so the roots stay moist but never waterlogged. Humidity: Provide moderate to high humidity indoors to help reduce leaf edge browning and support clean foliage growth. Light Care: Keep in bright filtered light and rotate container plants occasionally to encourage balanced upright growth. Fertilizing: Feed during the active growing season with a balanced fertilizer to support strong foliage production and steady growth. Overwintering: Move container plants indoors before cold weather or protect them from frost, since this tropical plant is not reliably hardy in freezing climates. Leaf Cleanup: Remove yellowing, damaged, or aging leaves as needed to keep the plant looking clean and encourage fresh growth. Why Choose Stingray Elephant Ear? Unique Leaf Shape: Produces glossy green leaves with a winged blade and long tail-like tip that resembles a stingray. Architectural Form: Adds upright structure, bold foliage, and sculptural tropical character without relying on flowers. Container Friendly: Performs well in decorative pots where it can be enjoyed outdoors in warm weather and protected indoors before frost.
