Allee Elm

Allee Elm (Ulmus parvifolia 'Emer II')Allee Elm is a large deciduous shade tree valued for its graceful vase-shaped canopy, glossy foliage, attractive exfoliating bark, and strong urban performance. Its upright arching form gives the landscape a classic elm look while offering improved resistance to several common elm problems. This fast-growing tree is well suited for lawns, streetscapes, parks, campuses, large residential properties, and open spaces where broad shade and long-term structure are needed. With full sun, well-drained soil, and room to mature, Allee Elm brings elegance, durability, and year-round character to the landscape. Distinctive FeaturesAllee Elm develops a broad upright vase-shaped canopy with arching branches that create a refined shade tree form. Small glossy green leaves provide a clean summer canopy before turning shades of yellow, orange, rust, or reddish tones in fall. One of its best ornamental features is the mottled exfoliating bark, which develops a patchwork of gray, tan, orange, and brown tones with age. Small inconspicuous flowers appear before the leaves, followed by flat winged samaras, while the tree is also valued for strong resistance to Dutch elm disease and elm leaf beetle. Growing Conditions Sun: Grows best in full sun, where it develops strong branching, dense foliage, and the best canopy form. Soil: Adapts to a wide range of well-drained soils, including average urban soils, clay, loam, and moderately dry sites once established. Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide supplemental water during extended drought to support healthy growth and canopy density. USDA Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 4 to 9. Mature Size: Typically reaches about 50 to 70 feet tall and 35 to 55 feet wide with age, depending on site conditions. Habit: Forms a large deciduous shade tree with an upright vase-shaped habit, arching limbs, and a broad mature canopy. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a large shade tree focal point in open lawns, parks, wide front yards, or spacious landscapes where its vase-shaped canopy and ornamental bark can develop fully. Street Tree: Plant along broad streetscapes, parkways, and municipal plantings where a tough, upright shade tree is needed. Shade Tree: Use in large residential or commercial landscapes to provide summer shade, canopy structure, and long-term landscape presence. Urban Landscape: Plant in suitable urban settings where its adaptability, disease resistance, and upright branching make it useful for managed landscapes. Open Space Planting: Use in parks, campuses, large lawns, and public landscapes where a durable elm can provide scale, shade, and seasonal interest. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Water deeply during the first few growing seasons to establish a strong root system, then water during prolonged dry periods as needed. Mulching: Apply a wide mulch ring to conserve moisture, moderate soil temperature, and reduce mower damage near the trunk. Pruning: Prune young trees to develop strong branch spacing and a stable central framework while removing crossing, damaged, or poorly attached branches. Fertilizing: Fertilize only when needed based on soil conditions, since established elms often perform well in average soils. Spacing: Provide plenty of room away from buildings, overhead wires, and narrow beds so the mature canopy can develop properly. Monitoring: Watch for stress-related issues, cankers, leaf spots, and common elm insects, especially during drought or poor site conditions. Why Choose Allee Elm? Classic Elm Shape: Develops a graceful vase-shaped canopy with arching branches that gives the tree a timeless shade-tree appearance.
