Alexander Yellow Loosestrife

Alexander Yellow Loosestrife (Lysimachia punctata 'Alexander')Alexander Yellow Loosestrife is a bright, variegated perennial that adds color and texture even before it begins to flower. Its cream-edged foliage helps lighten up garden beds, while the yellow blooms bring a cheerful summer display that feels fresh and classic at the same time. This cultivar is especially useful in borders and mixed plantings where foliage contrast matters just as much as bloom color. It performs best where the soil stays evenly moist and the planting has room to develop naturally. Distinctive FeaturesAlexander Yellow Loosestrife is prized for its upright stems, green leaves edged in creamy white, and bright yellow star-shaped flowers that line the stems in early to mid summer. It typically reaches about 2 to 3 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide, though it can slowly spread by rhizomes over time. The variegated foliage gives it a more decorative presence than the straight species and keeps it visually useful even when it is not in bloom. In hot, dry conditions, leaf edges may scorch, so consistent moisture helps it look its best. Growing Conditions Sun: Plant in full sun to part shade, with some afternoon shade helpful in hotter climates. Soil: Grow in moist, humusy, well-drained soil for the best foliage quality and strongest growth. Water: Provide medium to regular water and avoid letting the soil stay dry for long periods. Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 4 to 8. Habit: Expect an upright, clump-forming to slowly spreading perennial with rhizomatous growth. Ideal Uses Perennial Borders: Use it in mixed borders where the variegated foliage can brighten nearby green plants throughout the season. Focal Point: Place it in a smaller bed or grouped planting where the cream-edged leaves and yellow flowers can create a bright seasonal highlight. Cottage Gardens: Add it to informal plantings where its upright growth and relaxed flowering habit fit naturally. Moist Garden Areas: Use it in consistently moist beds or near water features where it can perform without stress from dry soil. Mass Planting: Plant it in groups where the foliage pattern and flower color can create a wider sweep of texture and brightness. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist during dry periods to protect the variegated foliage from browning at the edges. Cleanup: Remove spent stems after flowering or cut the plant back at the end of the season to keep the planting tidy. Division: Divide clumps as needed to manage spread and refresh vigor in older plantings. Mulching: Apply mulch around the base to help conserve soil moisture and reduce weed competition. Placement: Give it room to naturalize gently or place it where occasional rhizome spread will not crowd weaker neighboring plants. Why Choose Alexander Yellow Loosestrife? Variegated Foliage: Cream-edged leaves provide bright contrast from spring through the growing season. Cheerful Bloom: Yellow flowers add a lively summer display that works well in many garden styles. Season-Long Interest: The foliage remains attractive well beyond the bloom window.
