Aleppo Oak Galls have been used in tanning from the earliest periods that records were kept. They are famous the world over for their high tannin content (50-70%) and clean light colors. Most typically used to tan skins that you want to keep as close to natural color as possible (for example fish or snake skins), and as a base to then dye over as the colors are crisp and clean. Treasured in natural fabric dyeing for the same reasons, as well as the main constituent in traditional ink making. We import these in bulk directly from the people who harvest them and pass along amazing prices to you. Compare: Dye house prices = $45 to $75 per pound Our price = $12 to $14 per pound The galls are growths on oak trees created by wasps as a temporary home to hatch their young. These galls are then hand harvested after the wasps have hatched and left. They contain gallo-tannins which are easily extracted with cold to warm water. No need to cook. For lightest colors, add the tannin directly to the tannin bath with your materials to allow the tannin to naturally leach out. It takes about 1 lb. of allepo gall powder to tan 2-3 lbs. of prepared hide or skin. I bought it for cleaning up a full sheepskin someone gave me, but the skin was actually so clean already that I haven’t put the scraper to use yet. It will come in handy with the next skin, probably! 4 days ago Anne F.
