Aldora Vis a Vis

The Moooi Aldora Vis a Vis is Cristina Celestino's solution to creating seating that works in the middle of a room without looking awkward or unfinished from any angle. The vis-à-vis configuration - French for "face to face" - places two seats back-to-back with those dramatic winged backrests on opposite sides, so you get sculptural calla lily curves no matter which direction you're approaching from. What's clever is how this setup creates natural privacy zones even in open spaces - two people can sit comfortably without being forced into conversation, making it perfect for office lobbies, waiting areas, or homes where you want flexible seating that doesn't demand everyone interact. The wood and steel frame wrapped in foam and upholstered in your choice of fabrics or leathers gives you enough customization that it can blend into corporate environments or work in residential spaces that need statement furniture. The real advantage shows up in how this piece solves the floating furniture problem. Most sofas look unfinished from the back, so they get pushed against walls even when you have the floor space for better layouts. The Aldora Vis a Vis is designed to be freestanding - it looks intentional and complete from every angle, which opens up room arrangements that wouldn't work with traditional seating. The dual-sided setup means you're getting functional seating on both sides rather than wasting half the footprint. The seat depth and backrest curves provide genuine comfort for extended sitting, not just those pieces that look sculptural but nobody actually wants to use for more than five minutes. The construction feels substantial enough for commercial use where furniture takes a beating, with proper frame engineering and quality upholstery that holds up over time. Moooi operates out of the Netherlands with a reputation for working with designers who solve actual spatial problems rather than just creating variations on existing furniture types. Cristina Celestino established her Milan studio in 2013, bringing this approach where she looks at how spaces actually function and designs accordingly. The Aldora family launched with the sofa and chaise longue in 2022, with the vis-à-vis configuration added in 2023 after seeing how people were using the original pieces. The brand's known for quality construction methods and materials that justify the investment - these aren't novelty pieces that fall apart after a few months of real use. They collaborate with designers across Europe who understand that furniture in commercial settings or busy homes needs to handle daily use while maintaining its visual impact, which is why pieces like the Aldora show up in actual offices and hotels rather than just design showrooms.
