Dating to 1913, just one year after the end of the Meiji era, this Japanese promotional calendar is a beautiful example of early Taishō commercial art. Created for a sake brewery in Fujisawa, it combines practical advertising with imagery traditionally associated with good fortune for the New Year. Three elegant tancho, or red-crowned cranes, perch on the branches of an old pine tree before a brilliant rising sun, with Mount Fuji appearing in the distance. Each element carries an auspicious meaning in Japanese culture. Cranes are closely associated with longevity, pine represents endurance, while the rising sun and Mount Fuji reinforce ideas of renewal, prosperity, and Japan itself. Together, the imagery transforms the advertisement into a visual wish for good fortune in the year ahead. The calendar at right incorporates Western solar dating alongside traditional Japanese calendrical information, while circular diagrams below reference systems used to determine directions, zodiac cycles, and auspicious or inauspicious dates. Their inclusion reflects a period when modern daily life increasingly followed Western systems while older methods of interpreting the calendar remained culturally important. The left panel advertises the Fujisawa sake business that commissioned the print. Like other hikifuda, it was intended to be both useful and attractive enough for a customer to keep on display, allowing the merchant's name to remain visible throughout the year. Produced at the beginning of the Taishō period, the calendar captures the meeting of traditional Japanese symbolism and increasingly modern commercial advertising. Its cranes, pine, Mount Fuji, and enormous red sun turn an everyday piece of promotional material into an elaborate New Year greeting from merchant to customer.
