Alcantarea imperialis

The Alcantarea imperialis. A spectacular and dramatic member of the Bromeliad or Pineapple family, this is one of the largest bromeliads in existence. Native to the steep, granite cliffs of the Serra dos Órgãos mountain range in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, this plant is a true marvel of nature. This giant forms a majestic, star-shaped rosette of broad, strap-like, leathery leaves that can grow up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) across. The foliage is incredibly variable, with many stunning cultivated forms available, including the 'Rubra' variety with deep burgundy leaves and the 'Silver Plum' with silvery-green tops and rich purple undersides. Its sheer size and impressive form make it an outstanding statement plant for any landscape. After many years of growth (often 8-20 years or more), it produces its crowning glory: a towering, candelabra-shaped inflorescence that can reach up to 4 meters (13 feet) in height. This magnificent bloom spike hosts thousands of small, slightly fragrant, creamy-white to yellow flowers, which are pollinated by bats in their natural habitat. As a monocarpic plant, the mother plant will die after flowering, but not before producing several "pups" (offsets) at its base to continue its legacy.   Care Instructions: Provide bright, filtered light to full sun for the most vibrant foliage color. While it can tolerate semi-shade, the strongest leaf colors (especially the burgundy and purple hues) develop in brighter conditions. This is a tank bromeliad; keep the central cup (rosette) filled with fresh, clean water at all times. Flush the tank regularly (every few weeks) to prevent stagnation. Water the soil/medium sparingly; it prefers to be on the drier side, and overwatering can lead to root rot. Reduce watering in winter.
