Albino Corydora (Corydoras aeneus var. albino) (Unsexed)

Brighten up your aquarium floor with the energetic, peaceful Albino Corydora (Corydoras aeneus). Famous for their shimmering pinkish-white bodies, ruby-red eyes, and constant foraging activity, these bottom-dwelling catfish are an essential cleanup crew member and an absolute staple for any peaceful freshwater community aquarium. Highly social, active during daylight hours, and exceptionally hardy, the Albino Cory Catfish is the ideal choice for beginners and experienced aquarists alike. Place of Origin & Natural Background While Albino Corydoras are selectively bred captive varieties of the classic Bronze Cory (Corydoras aeneus), their ancestral roots trace directly to the slow-moving rivers, tributaries, and flooded marshlands of South America—particularly throughout the Amazon basin, Colombia, and Trinidad. In their native habitats, they inhabit shallow waters with soft, sandy bottoms and abundant leaf litter. Care & Hardiness Albino Corydoras are among the hardiest bottom-dwellers in the freshwater hobby. They adapt well to standard community water parameters and tolerate a wide range of conditions: Water Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C) pH Range: 6.0 – 7.8 Hardness: 2 – 12 dGH Care Level: Easy / Beginner-friendly Note: Corydoras possess a specialized auxiliary respiratory system, allowing them to breathe atmospheric air. You will often see them dart to the water surface for a quick breath before heading straight back to the substrate—this is completely natural, healthy behavior. Minimum Tank Size & Schooling Requirements Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons School Size: Corydoras are highly gregarious schooling fish. They should always be kept in groups of at least 6 or more of their own kind. Keeping them in proper shoals reduces stress, boosts natural foraging activity, and prevents skittish behavior. A 20-gallon long tank is ideal as it maximizes horizontal floor space for them to roam. Aquarium Environment & Substrate The bottom environment is crucial for Corydoras: Substrate: A soft, fine sand substrate is strongly recommended. Coarse gravel or rough, sharp substrates can wear down or damage their delicate sensory barbels, leaving them vulnerable to bacterial infections. Aquascaping: Provide plenty of live freshwater aquarium plants (such as Java Fern, Anubias, and Cryptocoryne), smooth river stones, and natural driftwood caves to offer shaded hiding spots where they can rest during bright lighting periods. Flow & Filtration: Gentle-to-moderate water flow with clean, well-oxygenated water is ideal. Diet & Feeding Albino Corydoras are dedicated bottom foragers, but they cannot survive solely on leftover scraps from top-dwelling fish. To ensure optimal health, vitality, and coloration, feed a balanced, sinking diet: Staple Foods: High-quality sinking wafer pellets, sinking micropellets, and bottom-feeder tablets. Protein Treats: Supplement several times a week with frozen or freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex worms, baby brine shrimp, and daphnia. Ideal Tank Mates Albino Corydoras are completely peaceful and will never bother other tank inhabitants. They thrive alongside non-aggressive community species, including: Small tetras (Neon, Cardinal, Ember, Rummy-Nose, Black Neon) Rasboras (Harlequin, Hengeli, Chili Rasbora) Dwarf gouramis and honey gouramis Guppies, endlers, platies, and mollies Freshwater shrimp and ornamental snails Other peaceful dwarf cichlids (such as Apistogramma or Rams) Avoid large, aggressive, or predatory species (such as large cichlids or aggressive catfish) that could bully or attempt to eat them. Breeding & Spawning Breeding Albino Corydoras in the home aquarium is relatively straightforward. Conditioning the group with high-protein live or frozen foods (like bloodworms) alongside a cool-water water change (dropping the temperature 2–4 degrees to simulate the rainy season) often triggers spawning behavior. The female will accept sperm in the classic "T-position" before carrying adhesive eggs between her pelvic fins to deposit onto aquarium glass, plant leaves, or spawning mops. For high fry survival rates, move the eggs to a dedicated rearing container with an airstone and feed hatched fry infusoria followed by baby brine shrimp.
