The Alaska American Region was persuaded to hold a contest open to all Alaskan children grades 7-12 to design Alaskas new flag. Benny Benson was one of the children who participated in this contest. Due to unfortunate events, Benson was sent to an orphanage in Unalaska. He submitted his flag design with a brief excerpt, “The blue field is for the Alaska sky and the forget-me-not, an Alaska flower. The North Star is for the future of the state of Alaska, the most northerly in the Union. The dipper is for the Great Bear – symbolizing strength.” In May 1927, the two houses of the territorial legislature adopted the flag design. Alaskans flew the flag for the first time on July 9, 1927. During the ceremony in Seward, Benny was awarded a watch with the flag emblem on it and a $1,000 educational scholarship, which he used to study diesel mechanics. Alaska became a state in 1959 and Bensons flag became the official state flag. The flag has a dark blue field that display eight golden stars. Seven of those stars are arranged to form the Big Dipper, while the eight is set apart from the others in order to represent the North Star. The flags story is a reminder of the importance of listening to the ideas and opinions of young people.  Read more about the Alaska State Flag at the State of Alaska Historical Society.
