Entering production in 1997, a total of 131 aircraft were manufactured. Primarily designed as an air-superiority fighter, subsequent upgrades in weapon systems allow a reasonable ground-attack capability. This includes iron bombs, Maverick missiles, and stand-off weapons , such as the Hsiung Feng II anti-ship missile and the Wan Chien cruise missile.
