What are the key factors to consider when buying raw Afghan rubies for lapidary or collection purposes? When buying raw Afghan rubies, consider origin, color, clarity, and treatments. Afghan rubies are known for their deep red, pigeon blood, and purplish pink hues, which are highly desirable for both lapidary cutting and collection. Buyers should also check for transparency levels (transparent, semi-transparent, SI, or included) and confirm the stones are untreated, as natural rubies hold higher value. Purchasing in bulk lots, such as 100 carats, offers flexibility for both gemstone cutting and long-term collection. 2. How to identify the quality and value of raw, uncut Afghan rubies? The quality and value of raw Afghan rubies are determined by color intensity, clarity, and carat size. Stones with a strong pigeon blood red or vivid purplish-pink color are considered top grade. Larger rubies, especially in the 5–12 carat range, carry higher per-carat value. Natural inclusions are expected, but transparent or semi-transparent stones are more suitable for faceting. Since this lot is 100% untreated, buyers can trust the rubies’ authenticity and long-term value. 3. Where can I find reputable and ethical suppliers of raw Afghan rubies? Reputable suppliers of Afghan rubies should provide clear details about origin, treatments, and lot composition. At Folkmarketgems, we offer directly sourced Afghan rubies in small bulk lots of 100 carats, making them ideal for lapidary artists, jewelers, and collectors. Our rubies are sold in natural rough form with no treatments, ensuring both authenticity and ethical sourcing. Buying from trusted gemstone businesses with transparent policies guarantees a safe and reliable purchase. 4. What are the challenges or risks associated with buying rubies from Afghanistan? One of the challenges in buying Afghan rubies is the prevalence of treated or misrepresented stones in the market. Many sellers may heat-treat rubies or mix them with synthetics, which reduces long-term value. Political and mining instability in Afghanistan can also limit supply, making authentic untreated rubies rarer and more valuable. To reduce risk, buyers should choose suppliers who disclose treatment status and origin details, as is the case with our 100-carat untreated ruby lots. 5. How do treatments or natural characteristics affect the value and suitability of Afghan raw rubies for faceting or collecting? Treatments such as heating or fracture-filling lower the value of rubies, as they compromise natural integrity. Untreated Afghan rubies, like those in our 100-carat lot, retain higher value for both cutting and collecting. Natural inclusions, transparency levels, and color variations are part of their identity — transparent or semi-transparent stones are best for faceting, while included rubies are often prized by collectors for their authenticity. The absence of treatments ensures these stones remain desirable, ethical, and investment-worthy.
