About This Piece: The drawing in the image is a graphite sketch on smooth, cream wove paper titled Beddgelert Church, created in 1805 by the British artist Cornelius Varley (1781–1873).  The composition captures a picturesque landscape in Wales, specifically in the area of Glaslyn, with the historic St. Mary's Church nestled in a valley. The drawing is characterized by its delicate, painstaking lines and use of blank paper to define partial sketches, a style typical of Varley's field work during his Welsh tours. The scene features prominent hills and mountains in the background, a river or stream in the foreground, trees, rocks, and small figures, all rendered in fine detail.
