A Sister (Une Soeur)

Bastien Vives in English! Given that Vives' is one of the brightest stars in French BD and that his stories are often about awkward young people (teens and twenty-somethings), it's surprising that his work is so seldom picked up by American publishers. From the publisher: A coming of age story in the tradition of Tillie Walden's Spinning. Antoine, 13 years old, is on holiday at the seaside with his parents and his younger brother, Titi. Both spend most of their time drawing, at restaurants and on the beach. One night, Antoine discovers another person lying in their bedroom. Hélène is 16 years old; she and her mother came to spend a few days and her presence and behavior will change Antoine's life. In "A Sister", Bastien Vivès, a master of suggestion, conveys the stumbling awakenings of adolescent desire. The story is a narrative jewel, created by one of the most important authors of the contemporary international graphic novel scene. "This sensual album, tinged with nostalgia, immerses the reader in an atmosphere that leaves in its wake strong and persistent impressions, like an early morning dream, long after the book has been closed." --FRANCE INFO / CULTUREBOX "Vivès knows how to relate intimacy, desire and embarrassment. It is an album to read and reread." --DBD "Don't miss one of the best comics of the year." --TMAGAZINE
