HERBERT STOVER'S LAST NOVEL - NEVER BEFORE PUBLISHED! Joel Pender had completed two years of medical school when bitterness at his parents’ deaths and their sacrifices drove him to West Virginia at the start of the Civil War. After two years as a teacher and doctor there, the threat of being drafted into the Army or captured by guerillas looms large. Joel is considering leaving the town and girl, Trudie Quinn, that he loves. He and Trudie are captured by a guerilla gang, which robs a paymaster shipment, killing most of its guards. Joel escapes and frees Trudie as the Army tracks down the guerilla hideout. The leader and most of his men are killed. Lee Harne pursues Joel, who he believes has taken the paymaster money. The Army seeks Joel for questioning. Joel and Trudie head north, parting ways at the Pennsylvania border. Joel goes to Gettysburg and helps with the aftermath of the battle. Returning to his hometown, Joel works as schoolteacher. After an epidemic of flu, Joel is apprenticed to a new doctor in town. Many are working behind the scenes to help clear Joel’s name. After he is coerced into helping an Army patrol catch deserters, Joel gives up and joins the Army. Another brush with Harne results in Joel’s wounding. In hospital, he discovers that his name has been cleared. He is discharged from the Army with the orders to become a doctor. He finds his sweetheart and they begin a new life together.
