A Flag for Juneteenth

Celebrate freedom, history, and community with A Flag for Juneteenth, a beautifully unique picture book by debut author and quilter Kim Taylor. Set on June 18, 1865, the night before the historic announcement of freedom reaches enslaved African Americans in Texas, young Huldah is preparing for her tenth birthday. She has no idea that by the next morning, her life—and the lives of her entire community—will change forever. As news of freedom spreads, Huldah and her neighbors come together to create a community freedom flag, celebrating hope, resilience, and the joy of emancipation. What makes this story truly special are Kim Taylor’s hand-sewn and quilted illustrations, giving each page a tactile, homespun feel that brings the celebration, the history, and the emotions of the day to life in a way that is both beautiful and unforgettable. Perfect for children ages 4–8, A Flag for Juneteenth is a story of courage, community, and the power of celebration, honoring the first Juneteenth while inspiring readers to reflect on freedom, equality, and togetherness. With 40 pages of richly detailed, quilted art and a heartwarming narrative, this is a picture book that families will treasure and revisit for years to come.
