9/11: As It Happened | Primary Source Investigation & Timeline Activity

A Powerful September 11 Lesson Investigation Help your students do more than just learn what happened on September 11th. Help them experience how the day unfolded and how Americans grew to understand the what was happeing- from shock, confusion, to fear, anger, and resolve.  INVESTIGATIVE QUESTION: How did Americans' understanding of the attacks change as the day unfolded? GRADE LEVELS: 8-12 In this investigation, students move through 12 pieces of evidence in chronological order, following the events of 9/11 almost as Americans experienced them that morning. Instead of starting with the full story, students have to think about what people knew at that moment, what they didn't know, what information was wrong, and what they might have been thinking or feeling. Students examine a powerful mix of primary sources, including: ✓ Transcripts of phone calls from hijacked airplanes ✓ Air traffic control recordings ✓ Live footage of the attacks (nothing too graphic is shown) ✓ Breaking news coverage and the confusion of early reporting ✓ A real email thread from someone in New York City trying to flee to safety ✓ Records of calls from passengers aboard Flight 93 ✓ Live footage of the towers collapsing ✓ President Bush's addresses to the nation As each new piece of evidence is revealed, students complete an Evidence Analysis Log (see previews) and continually ask: What do they know now that we didn't know before? By the end, students aren't just able to explain the events of 9/11. They can see how quickly an ordinary morning became something completely unimaginable, how difficult it was to understand what was happening in real time, and how fear, confusion, misinformation, and uncertainty spread as the attacks unfolded. Students finish with a Final Analysis that challenges them to identify the turning point when a coordinated attack became clear, examine misinformation during the crisis, consider how Americans experienced the day, and support their conclusions with evidence. Includes: ✓ 12 chronological evidence sources ✓ Links to primary source audio, video, transcripts & images ✓ Student Evidence Analysis Log ✓ Final critical-thinking analysis ✓ Teacher instructions ✓ Complete answer key ✓ Approximately 60–75 minutes If we hope that we "never forget 9/11," it's up to us to make it unforgettable.
