Antique Japanese Hand-Carved Ivory Tiger Netsuke 882651

A genuine antique Japanese netsuke — a hand-carved ivory toggle figure of a seated tiger, captured in a moment of watchful stillness. Netsuke originated in 17th-century Japan as functional sash-toggles for the inrō (a small lacquered case worn at the waist), and the finest examples like this one are now sought after as miniature sculpture in their own right. The carver has rendered the tiger’s incised fur, its tucked tail, and the alert turn of its head with the precision of a master craftsman; the natural patina from generations of handling tells the story of more than a century of careful ownership. 37.3 grams of solid carved ivory. A serious collectable — and a beautiful object that rewards close looking.
