A muted green and minimal gray streaked serpentine horned owl with turquoise inlaid eyes carved by Alvin Calavaza looking straight ahead with turquoise inlaid eyes. Alvin defined the wings simply incising feather rows. The base is simplified - carved from the same stone allowing the tail to flow downwards. The horned owl is named for the tufts of feathers that sit on top of its head, called plumicorns. The Zuni people generally view the horned owl, often called "the Night Grandfather," as a protector of the home, a guardian of ancestral knowledge, and a symbol of wisdom. As a keeper of the night, it symbolizes the ability to navigate the unseen, clairvoyance, and the uncovering of deception. Artist: Alvin Calavaza (signed) Size: 3/4 in. wide x 1-7/8 in. long x 2-1/2 in. tall #64915
