Egyptian Marble Wolf by Melvin Sandoval

A prominent black Egyptian marble wolf carved by the abstract artist Melvin Sandoval with a gray and brown vein placed on the wolf's right side. The distinguishing features are the shape of the face and the tail bringing up the rear. Melvin wrapped a simple offering bundle around the wolf's waist with sinew featuring San Felipe hand made melon shell heishi surrounding one large turquoise bead. For the Zuni, the wolf represents loyalty, family devotion, and the strength of the community. Because wolves mate for life and hunt together in packs, the Zuni see them as ultimate symbols of lifelong partnership, cooperation, and group survival.
