Leopard Marble Bird, Horned Owl by Jayne Quam

A distinctive gray spotted, golden and yellow ocher colored leopard marble horned owl carved by Jayne Quam looking slightly to its right side with turquoise inlaid eyes. Jayne inlaid her bits of stone and shell on the wings and back side of the owl's body in her unique style utilizing bits of jicarite, spiny oyster, serpentine and spiny oyster and sodalite to name most. Jayne has added her new style triangles to the back and left side of the owl - utilizing jet to make three and the last one is carved from pen shell. Around the triangles and most of the left wing are bits of chrysocolla sanded smooth and polished. The horned owl is named for the tufts of feathers that sit on top of its head, called plumicorns. The Zuni people generally view the horned owl, often called "the Night Grandfather," as a protector of the home, a guardian of ancestral knowledge, and a symbol of wisdom. As a keeper of the night, it symbolizes the ability to navigate the unseen, clairvoyance, and the uncovering of deception.
