Picasso Marble Sea Turtle by Cody Cheama

A prominent gray, cream and brown veined Picasso marble sea turtle carved by Lance Cheama's son; Cody Cheama. The turtle looks to its right side with turquoise inlaid eyes as it takes a step with its right flipper. Cody has carved the flippers prominently - adding cross hatch marks on the flippers as well as the top of the head. The turtle's shell has incised lines all over forming a plus sign at the middle with a turquoise dot inlaid at the center. Indigenous people recognize the turtle as the symbol of Mother Earth - some Native Americans believe that the turtle contributed to creation because the turtle dove into the primeval waters to retrieve mud to create the Earth. The turtle is regarded as a skillful navigator through life's difficulties. Turtle medicine teaches one to go with the flow.
