Mother-of-Pearl Bird, Cardinal by Alvin Calavaza

A shimmering mother-of-pearl cardinal with turquoise inlaid eyes carved by Alvin Calavaza. The bird is inlaid to a travertine base for added stability. Cardinals use their crests as a visual signal; it stands up when they're agitated or courting and lies flatter when they are calm. Cardinals represent devotion, loving relationships, courtship, and monogamy in Native American lore. Some tribes think cardinals are the harbinger of rain, while other tribes, like the southeastern tribes, associate good fortune and sun with them.
