Gold-Lip Mother-of-Pearl Maiden Figure by Gloria Chattin

A shimmering gold-lip mother-of-pearl maiden figure carved by Gloria Chattin featuring a corn maiden on each side - both have jet inlaid features and share long flowing incised hair. Gloria inlaid dots on each side under the maiden's neck in the corn rows to simulate corn kernels - utilizing bits of apple coral, purple, blue and white synthetic opal as well as chrysocolla and lapis. The corn rows taper downwards to a point with a lovely robe enveloping the maiden with incised triangles all around the edge in the front. There are also incised dragonflies flying off to the sides of the shawl along with three corn plants - all are inlaid with jet pigment. Finally, a soft aqua green serpentine base is inlaid to the maiden figure with sodalite bits glued all around it. Maidens symbolize abundance, fertility and feminine energy and the corn maiden is venerated in Zuni for giving up her life for the health of the community.
