Jet Bird, Raven by Derrick Kaamasee

A small detailed jet raven with turquoise inlaid eyes carved by Derrick Kaaamasee in an animated position. The bird appears to be sounding out a kaw with its beak open. Derrick has carved the feather rows and feathers in different ways - never appearing repetitive - always informative. The birds rests on a rock that creates a base that allows the tail to flow downwards and the talons to be carved in low relief. We love the positioning of the wings. The Zuni artists have told Sunshine Studio that ravens are filters and they are messengers of the great mystery; so they represent a change in consciousness. Ravens are the makers of light, thus the raven symbolizes the ultimate creator of all things that existed before the beginning of time.
