Onyx Bird, Horned Owl by Douglas Martza

A small, tan, brown, gray and red sienna veined onyx horned owl carved by Douglas Martza looking to its right side with turquoise inlaid eyes. Douglas has incised feathers all over the owl's body creating feather rows as well in a creative fashion. The bird has a small offering bundle wrapped around the neck like a necklace featuring coral beads surrounding two melon shell heishi with a turquoise pendant placed in the center. The horned owl is named for the tufts of feathers that sit on top of its head, called plumicorns. The Zuni believe the owl can see what others can not - they assist in helping to root out deception and they can get to the essence of true wisdom. Owls are messengers from the spirit realm - bringing wisdom, truth, and understanding of the mysteries of life.
