Antler Maiden by Raymond Tsalate

A prominent cream colored antler maiden with dark brown lines - created by Ray Tsalate - looking up at the viewer with pen shell slit style inlaid eyes and Mediterranean coral inlaid mouth. Ray has placed the brownish/gray porous marrow area of the horn on the top of the maiden's head then he incised lines all over to convey the hair strands and bangs. The maiden wears a kilt like a shawl with inlaid stripes on both sides of the opening created from strips of jet, turquoise, serpentine and pipestone. The maiden has a malachite and Mediterranean coral four dot necklace with one larger lapis pendant. The moccasins have a burnished edge and a turquoise dot clasp. Note: Ray started carving maidens first and the love he feels towards making them is so evident. Maidens symbolize abundance, fertility and feminine energy.
