Turquoise Maiden Figure by Vickie Quandelacy

A small turquoise maiden figure carved by Vickie Quandelacy with a maiden on each side wearing an ornate necklace - both maidens have jet inlaid eyes. The figure is mounted to a small sandstone base. The necklaces are primarily made with pen shell - with a coral pendant on one and a turquoise on the other. Vickie has added jet inlaid star bursts as well as dragonflies to the sides of the maiden figures then added malachite, lapis and jet dots to the maidens' shawls. Maidens symbolize abundance, fertility and feminine energy and the corn maiden is venerated in Zuni for giving up her life for the health of the community.
