Antler Bird, Hummingbird by Raymond Tsalate

A fantastic cream tinged antler hummingbird carved by Ray Tsalate with round pen shell inlaid eyes and beak - and raised wings. The hummingbird's dark pen shell beak is poised an eighth inch above the surface - thanks to Ray's expertise. Lapis pigment has been inlaid on the face as a stripe as well as in low spots on the hummingbird's forehead, just above the beak. The front portion of the nicely incised wings also has lapis pigment inlaid in the line and dash patterns. The bird’s ability to travel freely above the earth, migrate over vast distances and occupy an astonishing array of terrestrial habitats make it a powerful symbol of freedom. The hummingbirds are revered by the Zuni - they consider them messengers who have the ability to stop time.
