Apatite Maiden Figure by Kateri Sanchez

A large prominent dark pthalo blue green maiden figure carved by Kateri Sanchez featuring four corn maidens on the front side of the carving - two have mother-of-pearl inlaid faces and the two smaller maidens on the sides have pink mussel shell inlaid faces - all with jet inlaid features. Kateri has incised the hair framing each face as well as corn rows that taper down to a point - giving the maidens depth. The two maidens in the center have purple alunite pendants and one maiden on the left has a coral pendant and the other a turquoise. The maiden symbolizes abundance, fertility and feminine energy and the corn maiden is venerated in Zuni for giving up her life for the health of the community.
