Spiny Oyster Medicine Bear by Troy Sice

A spiny oyster medicine bear with lapis inlaid eyes carved by Troy Sice. The bear is primarily a striped white, orange and alizarin crimson on one side and white on the opposite side with a small portion of red at the top of the bear's back. Troy has added a fantastic offering bundle to the top of the bear's back featuring a long mother-of-pearl arrowhead with turquoise heishi surrounding two opal beads with one branch coral bead placed at the center. The medicine bear shape is thought to resemble a cave opening - depicting a bear coming out of hibernation and the pose is the bear sniffing the ground for healing herbs. The Zuni believe the bear is endowed with curative powers, strength, adaptability and courage - powers that can influence both the spiritual and physical realm.
