Antler Bird, Horned Owl by Chris Peina

A detailed cream and gray colored antler horned owl with incised lines added all around the turquoise inlaid eyes that look backwards, carved by Chris Peina. Chris has left part of the outer horn's shell on the owl's tufts, beak and on the high points of the owl's body; depicting feathers. A small portion of the outer horn has also been left near the base of the carving. Chris learned to carve fro Rochelle Quam while they were a couple. The great horned owl is named for the tufts of feathers that sit on top of its head, called plumicorns. The Zuni believe the owl can see what others can not - they assist in helping to root out deception and they can get to the essence of true wisdom.
