Antler Birds, Horned Owls by Raymond Tsalate

Our first antler parent and child horned owl carving duo by Ray Tsalate that we are happy to have received! Both are carved from pieces of cream antler with gold-lip and pen shell inlaid eyes and dark mother-of-pearl inlaid mouths. Ray has then incised lines that radiate around the eyes, adding prominent burnished feathered tufts. The great horned owl is named for the tufts of feathers that sit on top of its head, called plumicorns. The Zuni believe the owl can see what others can not - they assist in helping to root out deception and they can get to the essence of true wisdom. Owls are messengers from the spirit realm - bringing wisdom, truth, and understanding of the mysteries of life. Animals carved with their offspring suggest the bond between the parent and child - no matter the species.
