Antler Birds, Eagle With Eaglet by Raymond Tsalate

An antler eagle with its eaglet. Both have burnished beaks, gold-lip and pen shell inlaid eyes and are carved by Ray Tsalate - delivered to Sunshine Studio in February of 2024. Ray has positioned the golden brown porous marrow areas on the top of the heads of the birds as well as the chest on the eaglet. The high points on the incised wings on both the eagles have been burnished a dark brown umber - contrasting nicely to the cream colored heads. The tips of the tail have also been burnished. Animals carved with their young - no matter the species - speaks to the bond that occurs between the parent and the child. The Zuni believe the creator made the eagle to be a teacher for mankind - the eagle is the guardian and master of the sky - revered for its power, strength and dynamic grace. The eagle has incredible vision so eagle medicine is to look at the comprehensive whole picture of all situations.
